MAUREEN HORANSKY

Biographical Sketch:

Maureen Burke-Horansky has ridden in a hot air balloon, floated down the Lumber River in a canoe, jumped out of an airplane, and walked across the United States. She is married to her best friend, Frank. They have five children and fourteen grandchildren. Irish to the Bone, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated all month.

In 2001, her deep passion for animals convinced her to start a new Moore County rescue organization, Animal Advocates of Moore County, Inc. The nonprofit 501(c)(3) has the only Feral Cat Station on the east coast with two shelters to house and feed 95 cats. AAMC has trapped over 4000 cats, spaying and neutering them. Volunteers and one paid staff rescue both dogs and cats, adopting them out at the Aberdeen Petsmart and PetSense in Sanford, only after they have received their shots and been sterilized. AAMC is unique in the fact, that if a resident’s dog or cat is hit by a car and the owners are unable to pay the emergency veterinarian costs, AAMC will share the cost with the owner or pay the complete bill.

Maureen believes people live longer if they volunteer. Following her own philosophy, she has volunteered at Carthage Elementary school, teaching reading, the Bargain Box, Family Promise, Pinehurst’s Welcome Center, and Animal Advocates for ten years.

She was born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, June 6, 1940. She lived, worked, and prayed there for 58 years, until Frank retired and they moved to Pinehurst. A place she calls, “Heaven’s waiting room!”
