We are pleased to introduce Electronic Books or E-Books to our readers – a new feature of the Voice of North Carolina.
This article is designed to help first time e-book buyers navigate the purchase process to acquire and read the e-book. Notices about the books are prominently displayed on this website on the right sidebar and above in the large photo on the Home Page.
When you “Click Here” on either ad, it will take you to the following:

Here you are given the choice of purchasing one of two formats, the MOBI or the ePub. Or you may also click on the yellow Back to Author Website if you choose not to purchase at all at this time. If you plan to transfer the book to a Kindle reader, click on the “Add to Cart” button to the right of the word “MOBI.” If you plan to transfer the book to a Nook, an iPad or a Sony or if you just want to read it on your computer and you don’t own any of the reading devices, click on the “Add to Cart” button to the right of the word “ePub.” After selecting the format then click on the red Proceed to Checkout button.
The next screen will summarize your order as follows:

Click Checkout button again. The next screen will ask if you are a returning customer, and if not, Click No and continue.
The next screen will ask for your billing information name, address, etc. as follows:

Note, the above form also asks for a password. This is where you enter whatever unique password with which you wish to personalize your account. It’s best to write your password down somewhere for use when you return to the site in the future for other e-book purchases as our inventory of e-books will be expanding.
Upon completion of these steps, you then submit your order. If you ordered the ePub format, for example, you will see the following on the computer:

• Right Click on the download link
• Select Save Link As
• Choose location on your hard drive to save your file such as Documents or any other file you wish. You may also rename the file here if you wish.
• After downloading, Open the file to read book on your computer. No other reading software is necessary if you downloaded the ePub format. If you already downloaded your e-book in the MOBI format and wish to read it on your pc or mac computer (or iPhone,iPad) you must also download the appropriate Kindle reader by going to and downloading the following: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=sa_menu_karl3?ie=UTF8&docId=1000493771 Then click on the Checkpoint Charlie e-book file and it will open.
• To transfer the ebook to your Sony, Nook or iPad electronic reading device see the instructions below.

• Press the Control key and click on the download link
• Select Save Link As
• Choose location on your hard drive to save your file

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTION FOR TRANSFERRING AN EBOOK FROM YOUR COMPUTER TO AN ELECTRONIC READING DEVICE
NOTE: You need only be concerned with the instructions for your specific electronic reading device:
1. How to Transfer E-Books to a Kindle
If you downloaded the MOBI file and wish to transfer it from your PC to your Kindle, do the following:
• Download the Kindle PC application to your computer from: http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=sa_menu_karl3?ie=UTF8&docId=1000493771
• From the Start menu, place your cursor on “Kindle.” Click on “Sync and Check for items” under the Kindle pull down menu.
• Highlight the e-book you wish to transfer to your Kindle by clicking on it.
• Connect your Kindle to your PC with the USB cable and open your Kindle PC account. The Kindle will automatically go into charge mode and give you a message that if you want to shop or read, you need to have it unplugged from the computer. Ignore this message for now. You are working with the computer and it has to be hooked up so don’t disconnect the Kindle from your computer yet.
• Go to the Tools tab on your PC and click on Options, then select Content, then click on the Change Folder tab.
• Scroll down the left sidebar column to Kindle, Click on Kindle and bring up the window that allows you to select the folder in which you want to open your e-book. Choose Documents, but when you click on it, you should not see anything. You will then click on Use Selected Folder at the bottom of the box.
• Unplug the USB cord from your computer and the e-book will appear on the Home Page your Kindle.
2. How to Transfer E-Books to an iPad
• Run iTunes
• Click on File menu and select “Add to Library…”
• Select e-book (.ePub) file from computer that you want to transfer and click Choose button
• On the left side under Library section, click on Books. Your books will be listed on the right side.
• Connect your iPad with computer and after few seconds your device will be listed under Devices section on the left side, select your device (iPad)
• Select the Books tab on the top
• Check the “Sync Books” checkbox and you can Sync all the books by selecting the “All books” option or few selected book by selecting the “Selected books” option
• Finally click on Sync or Apply button
• When iTunes completes syncing process, you can view these books in iBooks application on your iPad.
3. How to Transfer E-Book to a Nook
To read a eBook on your Nook, you will have to connect the Nook to your computer and copy the e-Book using the Adobe Digital Editions software. Here is a step-by-step guide.
• Install the Adobe Digital Editions software.
• Adobe Digital Editions is available for Windows and Mac, and can be downloaded here. Follow the instructions on this page to install the software on your computer.
• Download the eBook to your computer.
• You can download a eBook by clicking the “download” link on the My eBooks page on this website. You will need to be logged in to our website in order to access this page.
When you attempt to download your eBook, you may see an error message that the e-Book was not found on ‘s server. This happens if you are not currently logged into . You can follow the ‘Read’ link on the My eBooks page to log in, or, click here.
• Open the .acsm file in Adobe Digital Editions.
• Your eBook will download as an .acsm file. Locate it on your computer and double-click the file to open it into Adobe Digital Editions. You can also open the file by launching the Adobe Digital Editions program and selecting File > Import Files from the menu.
• Create an Adobe ID.
• The first time you open an eBook in Adobe Digital Editions, you will be prompted to create an Adobe ID. It is important that you do not skip this step, or you will not be able to transfer the eBook to your Nook later. This is account is free to create…just follow the steps in the application.
• The book appears on your shelf in Adobe Digital Editions.
• If you have successfully completed the first four steps, the eBook you purchased should now be available to read in the Adobe Digital Editions application on your computer. Next, you will need to transfer it to your e-Reader.
• Connect your Nook to your computer
• Use the USB cable provided to connect your Nook to your computer. The Nook should appear as an icon in the lower left corner of the Adobe Digital Editions application (underneath your Bookshelves).
• Drag the e-Book to the Nook icon.
• Simply drag the eBook onto the Nook icon in the lower left to transfer the file to your reader.
