Ted Shebs
Ted Shebs was born in Minneapolis in 1919 and moved to Chicago at the age of three where he grew up and attended the University of Chicago. He was drafted into the U.S. Army early in 1943 and served in several units before being assigned to the 11th Armored Division and shipped to the European Theater of Operations (ETO) in Sept. 1944 to serve in Gen. George S. Patton’s Third Army. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge (Ardennes Forest), Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. At War’s end in May, 1945, he was serving as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Co. A, 21st Armored Infantry Bat-talion. He returned to the States in August, 1945 to join the 97th Infantry Div. preparing for the invasion of Kyushu, Japan that was canceled when Japan surrendered. He then served as Company Commander in Camp Roberts, CA and Fort Knox, KY before being separated from active duty in May, 1946. Ted continued his military service for an additional eight years in successive positions of responsibility in the California National Guard culminating his career as Battalion Executive Officer in1954.
In civilian life, he was employed in San Francisco as a Mechanical Engineer Sales Consultant and later as Sales Manager. He was deeply involved in the development of the Polaris 1 and Minuteman solid fuel rocket engines. He left corporate life in 1960 to own and operate an Insurance Agency, Real Estate Brokerage and Land Development Company. He retired in 1988 and moved to Pinehurst, NC with his wife Beverly.
On November 17, 2010 Ted Shebs died at home where he had been lovingly attended by his wife, Beverly.
